During a one week intensive program, UTS interior architecture and product design students collaborated with the IKEA CO-CREATE team in Älmhult, Sweden, where a series of design briefs were proposed and using IKEA's design methodology, a series of high quality projects were produced.
ACCORDION CAPSULE COLLECTION
The sofa design has been placed in a typical small home of an urban family. The sofa has been placed in the shared kitchen space to facilitate bonding and connection. This can however be a place to seek privacy and personal space.
It can be used to eat, work and hang out in the one space. Thus enriching the lives and wellbeing of its user. The partition offers flexibility as a room divider and sound barrier for privacy as well as a decorative element paired with the sofa to create a zone to re-connect and play.
Modelled at 1:20 scale. The sofa and partition design was made with exiting polyester material to demonstrate the accordion folds. The ‘front’ and ‘back’ pieces of the sofa were laser cut on plywood, with cardboard as the partition casing.
HYGGE FOR PETS - IKEA PET CARRIER
‘HYGGE’ pronounced “hoo - guh” is a scandinavian term that encompasses a natural extension of a domestic space. The feeling of being conscious and content in the company of others.
The concept of HYGGE arose out of trying to find the small joys in the monotony of the cold, dark days throughout most of the year. It’s the ability to not just be present, but to enjoy the moment. Recognising what you have in front of you at the particular moment, feeling content with it and taking time for yourself. When adapting this human centric term to a design brief for a non-specific user, the sense of comfort and companionship in the presence of animals and pets was a topic of interest to pursue.
Thus in exploring HYGGE for pets, is an experience of contentment and companionship for both the owner and the animal.
